Client: HKP Architects

Wetherholt and Associates, Inc. provided building envelope consulting services as a subconsultant to HKP Architects.  Our services included a building envelope assessment, including the exterior walls, roofs, and related flashing transitions, for the three distinct portions of the Whatcom County Courthouse: the original 1930s building, the 1972 addition, and the 1991 addition. The site investigation included visual assessment, destructive testing, and water testing of sample areas of the exterior wall and roofs.  We utilized data loggers in the exterior walls to determine humidity levels during a period of several weeks.  RILEM tests were performed on areas of the existing brick panels, brick veneer, and EIFS.

Water testing and destructive testing investigations were performed with the assistance of Tatley Grund, who performed intrusive openings, repairs, provided lift access, and conducted water tests.

Following our assessment, we prepared a report with photographs, documenting our findings and providing general recommendations for repair and/or replacement.  Throughout the process, we were available to answer questions that arose concerning the building envelope assessment.

Based on the findings of the building envelope assessment, the owner chose to perform several interim maintenance repairs.  We were retained again by HKP Architects, to aid in the repair of nine maintenance items identified in HKP's Maintenance Letter and agreed upon by Whatcom County.  After obtaining security clearance, we performed any needed additional investigation services.  We provided review and comments on drawings and specifications, prepared by HKP Architects.  As the project progresses, we will provide part-time application inspection, and consulting services during the construction phase.
